Andrew Hewitt is a Consultant at Fairbridges Wertheim Becker where he heads the Entertainment Law Department. He holds the degrees of BA LLB from Rhodes University. He was admitted as an advocate of the High Court in 1995 and as an attorney in 1999.
Andrew is a leading expert in all legal work concerned with the production of film and television projects, from original concept to distribution. He has experience with both local and international productions, including foreign location shoots and official treaty co-productions, and has to date been involved in multiple high profile projects, representing both local and foreign clients. His experience includes advising on the commercial and financial issues affecting feature film and television programme development and production, accessing DTI Rebates and grants, licensing, as well as tax structuring and contracting pursuant to Section 120 of the South African Income Tax Act. He regularly advises on option agreements and copyright protection and has significant experience in the drafting of production and rights related agreements and the complexities involved with the international film and television business.
Andrew also has experience in music law, having represented a number of top recording artists in South Africa. He has advised on copyright and royalty disputes and assisted with the drafting of complex industry contracts from Artist, Publisher, Producer, Manager and Record Label perspective.
Before shifting his focus to Entertainment Law Andrew practised as an Employment Attorney for many years which expertise and know-how he continues to bring to the entertainment sector.
Andrew was admitted as a Solicitor with the Law Society of England and Wales in 2003 while living in the UK and remains on the non-practising roll in that jurisdiction. Andrew has been selected by Who’s Who Legal for inclusion in The International Who’s Who of Sports and Entertainment Lawyers 2013 and 2014 as a leading expert in Entertainment Law.
